Description:

Article 3-A - SUBURBAN TOWN LAW  Title 4 - TOWN DEPARTMENTS §  53-c.  Terms  of  office.  The head of a department and a deputy department head shall hold office until the first day of January next succeeding the first bi-annual town election held after his appointment, and  thereafter, shall hold office for the term of two years and until his successor shall have qualified,  provided,  however, that the appointees to such offices shall be removable at the pleasure of the town board unless otherwise provided by local law.

 

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASSEmployees in this class are responsible for performing repetitive and routine clerical and other basic office-related tasks, requiring the exercise of ordinary judgment.  Positions in the class may require some physical effort.  There may be considerable contact with the general public.  Work is done under direct observation and review by an immediate supervisor.  The incumbent performs related work as required.


TYPCIAL WORK ACTIVITIES(Illustrative Only)

  • Prepares and maintains a variety of records, inventories, reports, registers and other office related materials;
  • Operates various office equipment such as typewriters, computers, adding machines, copiers, fax machines, etc;
  • Opens, sorts, distributes, wraps, stamps, and post letters, packages and printed matter;
  • Answers telephone, takes messages, makes appointments and places outgoing and long distance calls;
  • Makes arithmetical computations;
  • Collects and delivers mail to and from the mail room;
  • Picks up and delivers interoffice material;
  • Orders supplies and materials for the office;
  • Assists the general public in understanding and completing various forms;
  • May compile and maintain files, statistics and other information for programs and for reports;
  • May collect fees and accounts for monies received;
  • May serve as switchboard operator;

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSWorking knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment; working knowledge of business aritmetic and English; working knowledge of the operation of automatic duplicating or microfilming equipment, or of a telephone switchboard may be required for some positions in the class; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with others; ability to keep accurate records; tact and courtesy; clerical aptitude; accuracy.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:  Either:

(A)  Graduation from high school or possession of high school equivalency diploma;

        OR

(B)  Two (2) years of clerical experience.


NOTE:  Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
